RESEARCH FOR DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

The music genre for this double page spread is R'n'B, we can see this from the images portrayed. The targeted audience for this type of magazine would be young teenagers aged between 14-19 who are interested in this type of music.

The layout of the double page spread is set out in a professional and clear which makes it easier for the audience to read what is being said, as it is clear it also attracts the targeted audience as it enables them to see the image of the R'n'B Singers clearly so they instantly know who it's aimed to give them more information.  The purpose of this double-page spread is to allow young teenagers to find out about new singles the artists have created.

There are two specific titles for this double-page spread one of them is consisted at the top left hand side of the page which says, 'Music Happening Now'. This implies that the music and artists they are talking about in this article is the new trend and the type of music everyone listens to. This will allow teenagers to get information on these new singles and also fit into the crowd. The second title consisted on the double-page spread is, 'The New Hotel California'. This title suggests by using the word "California", we know that it's a famous place for it's attractions and many celebrities spend their spare time here. Also by reading this teenagers would find out what types of hotels these celebrities stay at and when they go on holiday they would go and visit these hotels or even stay at them to increase attractions. The effect of having these two titles is that it would attract attention to the target audience. It would also persuade them to read the magazine article and buy it which would increase profit for the company.

The conventions used on the double page are "Making hits: Jamie Foxx and Drake". This conventions implies that this double-page spread will talk about new music hits that Jamie Foxx and Drake are producing. This would also help sell the magazine as they are famous singers in the music industry and people want to buy their albums. The main colours used on the double-page spread are red, black and white. By using these three colours it would make the magazine look more appealing to the audience and as these colours are bold and eye-catching. These colours also appeal to young teenagers as they are unisex and both males and females wear them. The colour white suggests that it's clear and bright also when you have a white background and black writing on top it engages the reader more as it makes it easier for them to understand what is being said. The colour red indicates love and passion this could represent the love they have for the music and the singer. The colour black also gives off a gangster impression that most young teenagers have today they don't really want to be told what to do, in some cases some of the song lyrics these artists produce give off a care free attitude.

The text ratio for this double page spread is roughly 60% of writing and 40% of images. This has a positive effect as it's not all wiritng or images so by doing this it will enable to reader to understand the context better as the images would relate to it. Also if this magazine was to be on a shop shelf most teenagers today don't really stop to read things so if there was an image of their favourite artist they would instantly know and therefore stop to read about the new gossip. Also as this double page spread is about celebrities it is not always easy to get a decent image of them as when they are in public most people tend you crowd them, so this could be another reason as to why there is more images than writing. Also as this article is talking about these celebrities and how they are probably advancing in their career, putting it into words is better as images won't give us as much information where as reading does. We know that the article is going to be about as the image is of a recording station and two famous singers, so we instantly know it's going to be about the music they have produced.

The tone of the magazine seems to be quite encouraging as it seems as thought they want young teenagers to buy the magazine and know more about the singers so they become more popular in society. This double page spread also uses standard English and it's for young teenagers who are still in study so if they didn't use standard English then it would effect them in a negative way.

The music genre for this contents page is R'n'B. The targeted audience for this type of magazine is teenagers aged between 14-19 year olds, especially girls. We know this by the colours used on the magazine for instance pink which are labelled as a 'girly' colour and the type of language used is informal so it's easier for them to understand. For instance, 'Future Club NME Tour' this also suggests that young teenagers mainly go on tours to see their favourite groups or singers. This also links back to the targeted audience.

The main image for the contents page is of a teenage boy band this tells us that girls would be attracted and it would grab their attention, wanting to know who this boy band where increasing their popularity. The image relates to the music genre because the way they are portrayed and the way they are dressed. The image framed at the left side and near the top of the contents page, although we can see the image in full as when can see the boys from head to toe, it is not that big this shows us that the other information included on the contents page is more important and relevant. The way the boys are presented in the image also gives us a pop star feel as they are standing in front of tall buildings which suggests that they are working their way up the career ladder to become famous singers, so that people from rich companies would employ them. Also the way they are dressed is all similar as they are wearing black jeans with different coloured shirts, this tells us that they belong together and are part of a group. By them sticking with each other will also increase their popularity in society. Also by wearing these clothes it suggests that they are just like everyone else as many people wear them, especially teenagers so this also links back to the targeted audience. The way that the boys are presetened gives off a 'care free' attitude which teenagers are most likely to have. Also as they are all doing different poses it could suggest their personality. The colours used on the contents page are mainly purple, pink, white and yellow. RESEARCH FOR MUSIC MAGAZINE FRONT COVER
The music genre for this magazine is R'n'B. The target audience for this magazine is mainly young teenagers aged between 14+. We know this from the language used for instance, 'MTV OFFERS', this links to teenagers as this is popular television show they are most likely to watch.

The main image of the magazine is of the singer Beyonce. This image relates to the music genre as she is a worldwide, famous celebrity singer. The image is in the centre of the magazine, taking up most of the space. This has a positive effect as it grabs the audiences attention because it's the first thing they see. The conventions included in the magazine are, straplines, main image, masthead, celebrities name and pug. However, the kicker, bar code, kicker and skyline are not included. The type of clothes Beyonce is wearing are plain and sophisticated this gives the audience the impression that she is career-motivated and has high status within society. The make-up she is wearing is simple which gives her a natural, everyday look. However, we can't really tell too much about the make-up as the image is in black and white. There are no major props included in the image although she is wearing a simple sliver bracelet on her wrist. This could suggest that although Beyonce looks simple and plain she still looks elegant which tells us you don't always need make-up to look good. The main colours on the magazine are black and white however, the colour red is used on the straplines to show the important information included inside the magazine. Also, the colours red, blue and yellow are used in the masthead to make it more visible to the audience. As beyonce is looking directly straight at the audience which makes the audience feel as thought the magazine is aimed at them and feel more involved.

The name of the magazine is 'Billboard', the magazine could  be called this as Billboard are meant to be big and stand out within the crowd also they are eye-catching to the audience. Billboards also tend to contain the most popular adverts. So by this magazine being called 'Billboard', could suggest that it's the next big thing and it contains all the gossip and information that teenagers want to know about. Also wants more people to buy it. The typeface used on the magazine is simple and clear to read. The copy of writing has been placed on the side of the front cover and the only writing that goes across the page is 'Billboard' and 'Beyonce', this is to show the main headings of the magazine and what it is about and it enables us to see the the image more clearly. The straplines are roughly font size 12/14 and the heading font size is roughly 38 which makes is bolder for people to see.

PRELIMINARY TASK COMPLETED

I have chosen to call my magazine 'Lordswood Sixth Form Centre', as this is the name of the school I currently attend, this will enable me to know a lot more about the school and what it has to offer to external students. The significant words such as 'sixth form', tells us the age range of people are from 11-18, this is a wide range of ages. From the front cover of the magazine we can see connotations such as you can see an image of an female student working in the sixth form block which tells us that at this sixth form they expect high standards from all the students and they take their curriculum seriously. Also the other images such as the students doing on drama performance of the contents page shows us the different types of courses they offer.

This magazine is aimed at sixth form students as it gives them information on the new courses offered and the results for these courses so they will know whether they have chosen the right course for them. They will also gain more information about the sixth form itself and what it has to offer.

The images on the front cover show a well-balanced working environment because even though they are in their own clothes the students still look motivated into their work. As on the front cover of the magazine we can see a sixth form student doing an assignment and on the contents page we can see a group of drama students working together. So this tells us that no matter what subject, individual or groups all students still try to achieve the best. Apart from the images, strapelines also occur on the front cover. For instance, "Newly opened sixth form block introduces higher expectations for 2011.". This tells the reader what they should expect from the upcoming year and the standards they have to meet. Apart from the straplines there is also a kicker on the front cover. "Together we learn, together we succeed, together we achieve." This will also motivate students. The colours relate to the school colours.Yes, my magazine does look similar to other magazine covers, as it only consists of a maxmium number of colours and handwriting styles, straplies, one main image and kicker. However, if I was to improve on this I would probably include a bar code, pug and the price.

I have tried to make the magazine's presentation to look sophisticated and not that cheap so people wouldn't buy it. I have also tried to make the title look bigger and bolder so it creates emphasis to the audience. In the magazine the articles covered are study based such as the types of courses, key dates, achievements etc.
